Irving, TX, – Men who are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer may find their doctors recommending more than traditional hormone therapy to ease symptoms and preserve lives. Recent studies are pointing to the benefits of combining this standard non-curative treatment with radiation to gain increased life-preserving benefits. One study, in fact, found the combination can lower the risk of death rather dramatically.
“When prostate cancer is diagnosed in more advanced stages, it is often deemed incurable,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “Hormone therapy is used to slow progression and help men in these cases enjoy the highest quality of life possible. Radiation has been traditionally avoided because of the potential side effects it may have, but studies are showing that combining the two measures can have significant impacts in lowering death risk.”
One of the more recent studies to delve into this topic involved more than 800 men who were treated either with the combination or hormone therapy alone. Researchers conducted follow-ups on the men within about 15 years after the diagnosis. Over that period of time, the study found that men who underwent both treatments saw their death risk drop from about 34 percent to 17 percent versus their counterparts who only received hormone therapy.
“The study points to the need for men and their doctors to closely consider all treatment options even when advanced prostate cancer is present,” says Dr. Echt. “Intervention with radiation may, in fact, enable men to live significantly longer.”
An estimated 161,000 men across the United States will face a diagnosis of prostate cancer in the coming year. In all cases, men and their doctors should review viable treatment options, their potential benefits and risks before making a treatment decision.
