Health Benefits of Probiotics

Probiotics (pro-life) are bacteria that live in our organism and help our digestive system to work properly.

Probiotics can be classified into two broad groups: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, each of them having other numerous subdivisions. This bacteria act as a firewall, protecting us from dangerous bacteria which can see an opportunity in a weak immune system and try to attack it. Probiotics help our immune system and make it stronger for upcoming battles with the enemy – viruses. They are found mostly in the large intestine which tends to keep its bacteria balance over the years.

Although these friendly bacteria can be found in some products (like yogurt or traditional pickles – no vinegar used, found mostly in Eastern Europe), scientists made it easier for us and we can find this friendly bacteria in a pill-shaped for the easier administration when the natural balance is destroyed. The difference between probiotics and other natural supplements is that they do their job, scientifically proven.

Naturally living inside us, they can be weakened by antibiotics, which cannot be selective and kill only the bad bacteria, also destroying our friendly bacteria. Doing so, our digestive system can confront several changes, not being able to extract all the nutrients from the food we eat, making us weak and vulnerable.

In the beginning, when research about probiotics started to be conducted, people were skeptical about the benefits these could have, but lately, more and more studies prove the advantages of our health. The first contact a person has with probiotics “cocktail” is when he is being breastfed, this is the reason why today pediatricians insist on the benefits of this practice, it helps the baby to develop his digestive system, but also the immune system.

Other benefits of probiotics are: relief from digestive disorders (constipation – the concentration of probiotics is too small or diarrhea – rushes the healing process so no other nutrients are being lost), IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and come very handy to those who are lactose intolerance. Being deprived of probiotics found in some products, those people get their dose from little probiotics capsules, ensuring a good balance to their intestinal flora, making the digestive process more efficient.
