International Author LaNiyah Bailey named 'Bud Billiken Kid of the Year'

Another huge accomplishment for eleven- year-old, anti-bullying advocate and youth author LaNiyah Bailey

Chicago, IL – Eleven-year-old author LaNiyah Bailey, famous for writing two highly-acclaimed children’s books has a new feather in her cap, with the Chicago Defender Charities and Bud Billiken Parade naming her “Bud Billiken Kid of the Year” for her commendable Anti-bullying efforts. Bailey was awarded her new title on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at The Dusable Museum of African-American History, in Chicago during the Bud Billiken “Royal Coronation” ceremony. A ceremony where eight children ages 8 – 12 are celebrated and crowned based on their academic achievements and commitment to community service. The Mistress of Ceremonies, was none other than ABC7 News Anchor, Karen Jordan.

With the help of Chez Smith (Chicago Defender Charities, Inc), Commissioner, Kari K. Steele (Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago), Marc Sengstacke PH.D., (Executive Director – Chicago Defender Charities) and their dedicated sponsor Michael Fisher (Country Financial) the children were celebrated, encouraged, and uplifted with a wonderful celebration. LaNiyah Bailey, took home the 3rd award for her anti-bullying efforts, along with a brand new bike.

In her speech LaNiyah Bailey thanked all of her supporters for their continued support. She also asked that everyone match her efforts in standing up for those that are being bullied and asked everyone to not be a bystander. An admirable speech given by Bailey presented a pleasant show of support from the audience.

LaNiyah Bailey and her two superhero friends referred to as the “Bully Buster’s” Jessica & Diva Pup have been traveling to schools worldwide for the past 5 years with her anti-bullying curriculum “Stand Up.” Acknowledging that many children undergo bullying for several reasons and being overweight is one of the most common reasons among them. She proudly states that by telling her story to other children it will help many of them to boost their self-confidence and protest against bullying. LaNiyah understands how bad it feels when someone starts bullying you. She was often bullied because of the size of her stomach. It was a very painful situation for her. With Mom (LaToya “Toyiah Marquis” White), Dad (Songo Bailey) and her entire family rallying behind her 100% it helped LaNiyah develop the courage needed to help her face the situation head on. Her mission is to help others who often go through similar situations.

LaNiyah’s stories which garner a very creative approach have been appreciated and awarded by a huge number of educators, parents and celebrities all over the world who think that her books are really inspirable and bring an intrinsic positive change in children to help them cope with bullying situations. Several parents believe that if such stories could be a part of their school’s curriculum, children would develop life-skills that will go a long way in chiseling their personal as well as professional life. With the Avalon Institute in Korea implementing this initiative into their 3rd – 6th grade curriculums we’re sure it’ll bring about positive changes in their student’s lives.
