Perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene also known as PERC is a colorless liquid which is chemically stable, non-flammable and has a sweet-smelling fragrance. PERC is manufactured by chloronylosis of relatively lighter hydrocarbons. It is used as a solvent in various chemicals. PERC is a chemical intermediate mainly used in refrigerants such as hyrdrofluorocarbon and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. Ethylene dichloride is treated with oxygen and chlorine in bed reactor, a process known as oxychlorination resulting in the formation of PERC. In certain cases, lighter hydrocarbons such as ethane are mostly preferred as raw materials. Sometimes, perchloroethylene is also manufactured using wastes such as chlorinated hydrocarbons.
