Part of these studies is finding out what is better, Hydroquinone or Kojic Acid. Both have been researched as good whitening agents, but it all boils down to long term results and side effects.
In many studies and literature, hydroquinone has been considered as the main whitening agent when it comes to topical application due to its ability to effectively impede melanin production. However, concerns have been repeatedly expressed with regards to the side effects of hydroquinone. The biggest of them is the possibility of skin darkening and developing cancer if used for long periods. This may have been the reason why it has been banned in many countries.
Kojic acid on the other hand has been seen as generally safe if you base it on different studies. It also has the ability to inhibit melanin and even has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Many skin product manufacturers would combine it with Vitamin C which is another effective whitening agent to match Hydroquinone’s potency. Today, Kojic Acid soaps with Vitamin C are available in almost every cosmetic store especially in Asia. But as with any skin care and beauty regimen, consult first with the dermatologist.
