Harbor Light Hospice has recently released brand new online resources for patients and families who are seeking comprehensive information about palliative care in the United States.

Glen Ellyn, Illinois (prnob) November 17, 2015 - Harbor Light Hospice, a national hospice care a palliative care services provider has released a new online informational website section on palliative care in the United States. The decision was made to heavily invest in producing educational materials on palliative care because nationally and globally, palliative care services are under-accessed.

Palliative care is a form of medicine that focuses on managing the symptoms of chronically ill patients or patients with a life limiting illness so that they are comfortable. Palliative medicine is not curative treatment as it does not focus on prolonging life. Palliative care focuses solely on enhancing the overall quality of a patient's life.

Symptoms management is commonly misunderstood to only designate physical symptoms. However, proper palliative care should seek to address a patient wholistically including spiritual, emotional and mental symptoms that a patient may be experience as a result of their illness and/or the treatments they are receiving.

A confusing concept is the difference between palliative care and hospice care. Hospice care is a specialized form of palliative care that is (in the US) only available to patients who have been diagnosed with a life limiting illness and have been given a diagnosis of having six months or less left to live. All hospice care is palliative care. However, not all palliative care is hospice care. Additionally, palliative care can be utilized alongside curative and other medical treatments.
