Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a very commonly found plasma protein in the human fetus. The AFP protein found in the human fetus is encoded by the alpha-fetoprotein gene, located on chromosome 4. The AFP plasma protein is produced at the time of fetal development in the liver and yolk sac. AFP, a glycoprotein, is found in dimeric, monomeric, and trimeric forms. Alpha-fetoprotein is produced in the fetus by immature liver cells and thus, infants have high levels of AFP. A low level of alpha-fetoprotein is found in pregnant women and also in the blood of healthy adults.
