Everyone in this life has been coached one way or the other. People’s lives have been influenced positively because they were guided coaches. Most coaches may have started and mastered their skills as professionals in different careers before they ended up in the coaching profession.  If one makes a careful observation of its origins, one can conclude that the coaching profession appeals to very different types of people with extremely wide variety of motivation. The reasons that a lot of coaches give to why they became coaches. But We can critically take a look at some of the core reason why people venture into coaching.

Financial

Money has always been a great motivation for people to venture into a particular career. And like all other careers, some people see coaching as career which one can earn a good living.  For some, it’s a get rich quick path. Then again like it is in most trades and professions, this motivation can work for only a few top of the class professionals in a given country who have gotten to the pinnacle of international recognition. Most will play at middle level who will do okay but will never get rich. The years of training and constant need to be abreast with trends and what is happening in industry is integral to your success. Of course connections play a big role in how you are able to land juicy coaching contract. One must discard the mirage of quick and consequential financial gains as the key motivation to become a coach, else it permeates into the practice. And one can recognize those by their impatience and trying to go too fast. And for those in this category, they have abandoned the move in a matter of a couple of years. Getting into coaching is like in any other artistic profession.  The qualitative learning experience will take years and demands strong personal commitment and resilience

Discontentment

For some people, the reason for getting into the coaching profession is because they are not content with their current careers. They are at a dead end of a career track and are looking for a new path and see coaching as way of helping people with the immense professional and life’s experience. Some even choose because they are interested in understanding the needs of professionals in other to know how to manage people when they finally settle as entrepreneurs. For some, it is simply looking for comfort away from an unsatisfying life. Those coming in for the comfort learns very quickly that coaching is not for the faint hearted by requires long hours and a lot of time away from home. So if you hear that a coach can set his own schedules and can manage a host of clients right at home. And start thinking of how comfortable they have it, think again.

Complementary skills

Some see coaching as a way to acquire complementary skill. More of a curiosity. Those in this category are mostly self-content and have done well in their careers and looking to explore. The folks in this category turns out to be some of the best at this because their motivation is driven to learn, to teach and to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Whatever motivates you, you need to think critically before deciding if coaching the best for you. Check out Center For Executive Coaching for more on becoming a high level business coach.
