Did you know, big data has been around 2005, launched by O’Reilly Media? Today, we will dive deep into the history of big data consulting and how it has evolved.  The earliest records of using particular data to control and track a business date back from seven thousand years ago, they were introduced in Mesopotamia to record the growth of herds and crops.  In 1663, John Graunt examined the mortality role in London. He wanted to collect the information and warn the community about the ongoing bubonic plague. In his first record of statistical data analysis, he collected his discoveries in the book ‘Natural and Political Observations Made upon the Bills of Mortality’ that provides vast insight into the death cause in the 17th century.  Because of such tremendous research, Graunt is considered as the father of statistics. Right from there on, the accounting principles enhanced but nothing incredible happened until the 20th century when the true information age started.

The earliest semblance of modern data is from 1887 when Herman Hollerith discovered a computing machine that could interpret holes punched on a paper to organize census data.

The 20th Century

In 1937, the major data project was created and ordered by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration in the USA. The government started to keep track of contribution from 26 million Americans and around 3 million employers after the Social Security Act became law in 1937.

IBM was allocated with a contract to build a punch card reading machine for such massive bookkeeping project.

In 1993, the first data-processing machine appeared and was developed by the British to decipher Nazi codes during WW II. This device was named ‘Colossus’ that used to search for patterns in seized messages at a rate of 5000 characters per second. Therefore, reduced the task from weeks to hours.

In 1952, the NSA (National Security Agency) was created, within a 10 year they contracted more than 12000 cryptologists. During the cold war, they are confronted with information overload as they started to process the intelligence signals automatically.

The US government decided to build the world’s first data center to store over 175 million sets of fingerprints and 742 million tax returns by transferring all those records into single magnetic computer tape that had to be stored in a single location.

The British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented www (World Wide Web) in 1989. He wanted to allow everyone to shares information via ‘hypertext’ system. Little could he know at that moment the impact of his discovery.

In the ‘90s, data creation spurred more and numerous devices started to connect with the internet. In 1995, the first-generation computer was built that was able to do as much work as a calculator but in milliseconds.

The 21st Century

As we already know in 2005, O’Reilly Media coined the term Big Data and only a year after that, they created its second version – Web 2.0. This version could handle a large number of data which is almost impossible to process and manage by traditional intelligence tools.

With the evolution of more and more social networks, massive data started to generate. From private to government, everybody started using Big Data for better data management and processing.

Now, Big Data has been extended globally and almost every organization equips them with technology.
