WHAT IS MOTION MAPPING?

We use a process called projection mapping, also known as video mapping, to create visual experiences. Projection mapping is a unique, creative process mixing digital visuals, projections and surfaces.

While motion mapping has been around since the early nineties, many people seems to be oblivious about it and its application in the modern world. We now live in the technology era, where technology is not transforming the way we communicate—but also the way information is being display. It is in this place that motion mapping comes in!

Motion mapping is also called “Video Mapping” or “Projection Mapping.” In the academia, it is refereed as “Special Augmented Reality”. Motion mapping is popular in some countries than others. For example, most event organizers in the United States frequently use motion mapping to humanized, personalized and create pulse racing experiences through the use of motion mapping. As a result of its wide usage in the event organizing industry, it has become popular.

Notwithstanding, many people may witness a real live motion mapping and not really know what it is. Other parts of the world are also keeping on track in the use of motion mapping for their events, programmes and occasions in order to create a memorable experience.

Motion Mapping

Motion mapping was pioneered in the early 1969 by the Walt Disney Corporation. The technique was used for the opening of Haunted ride in Disneyland. In the singing of the theme song, they filmed a head shots of the singers and then projected the film onto non-flat surface. Motion mapping was later developed, enhanced and used by corporations for their product/brand activation campaigns.

Motion mapping is simply the art and science of projection an image or video unto a non-flat or a non-white surface. It is involves the use of technology to turn objects into a display surface for video motion. It is like the advance version of the normal projectors. The normal projectors displays images or videos unto a flat surface or a white surface. But motion mapping goes a step further.

Motion mapping can be used to display images or videos unto any kind of surface. The following entails some of the objects that are commonly used as a display surface for motion mapping—buildings, indoor objects and theatrical stages. In view of this, they are used for both indoor and outdoor events to create a wonderful, memorable and ecstatic experience.

How Motion Mapping Works

Motion mapping works under a simple phenomenon. Light is mapped onto an industrial landscape—building, indoor objects or theatrical—space. As the light is mapped unto the object, it turns them into any 3D shape and converts the surface into an integrative display. The images projected onto the surface can be customized to fit any shape or size.

Most event organizers add a sound effect to the motion being projected onto the surface. They create an audio-visual narrative which captivate the attention of the audience and give the entire program a classic outlook. An amazing feature of the software used in motion mapping is its ability to mimic the real environment and create a sensational feeling on the skin as the video/image is being displayed.
